Catching up with the news....Attention
Ice Hogs season ticket holders…… Hawks finally announce signing of Flaherty, Jim Fahey, Prestin Ryan (7/27) Blackhawks press release Midsummer Report Cards: Central Division Wes Goldstein, CBS Sportsline (7/26) Hawks team page at CBS Sportsline here. Niklas Hjalmarsson to hit North America blackhawks.nhl.com (7/26) Hunter Tremblay soars at 'Hawks camp Timmins Press (7/27) ** The New York Times does 30 seconds with Patrick Kane. (7/28) Kane confirms the Hawks made him aware a month before the Draft, they’d be
picking him with the 1st pick. ** David Koci is Tooo CoooL!! ** Troy Murray turns 45 today (July 31st). ** Dirk
Graham turned 48 on Sunday (July 29). Darryl Sutter's summertime career choice Evan Weiner, NHL.com (7/27) Sutter talks about playing in Japan after junior hockey. ** One-time
Blackhawk winger Brad Lauer (13 total games played 1991-93) has been named as the new Milwaukee Admirals
assistant coach. Lauer was the other player acquired from the Islanders in the October 25, 1991 deal that
brought Brent Sutter to the Blackhawks in exchange for Adam Creighton and Steve Thomas. Michael Leighton signs 2-way deal with Carolina NBC Sports ** How hideous are the new Florida Panthers uniforms? ** I want to
thank the city of St. Louis, the St. Louis Cardinals, Adam’s Mark Hotel, Fat Tuesdays, Hooters~!, some places I probably
shouldn’t mention, and many friends and faces for their hospitality and a great weekend of hijinx; of course including
jovious levels of adult-beverage consumption. We’ll be looking forward to the three Saturday night,
Hawks@Blues, I-55 road game hysteria-sessions this season. I’ll say this about our southern friends
though, if they don’t alter their views on proper road etiquette during traffic back-ups by November 3, I’m bringing
Jack Nicholson’s golf club. Don’t dislike St. Loui-ans because their Cardinals fans are creepy,
dislike them because apparently no one in St. Louis is in a hurry to go anywhere and would rather form a single-file line
on a two-lane southbound road 3 MILES before the closing lane needs to merge, turning what should’ve been a four and
a half hour drive from Chicago to St. Louis into a six hour and ten minute commute. Global warming is alive
and well thanks to these idiots. Can you imagine giving up your space in a traffic jam to move to the merging
lane (3 MILES before it needs to MERGE) park your car, essentially commandeering a public way (I’m guessing because
of some belief that the rules of the road as written somehow omitted this) and creating a voluntary road block on the interstate
so the next two miles of vehicles can join your inane procession in recognizing a 300-foot stretch of road contruction on
I-55? Yeah, I missed Happy Hour and I’m still pissed! That’s not how I roll. Monday (July
30) in Blackhawks history… Travis Moen is traded to
the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for Michael Holmqvist. Oops. Tuesday (July
31) in Blackhawks history… 2006- Craig MacDonald signs 1-year contract with Blackhawks. 2001- Pascal
Rheaume is signed as a free agent (St. Louis). 2000- Robbie Tallas, free agent goaltender, signs
with Hawks. 1987- Jim Playfair (recent Flames head coach, now assistant to Mike Keenan) is signed as
a free agent.

The Third Man In ... is on vacationI have to apologize for the lack of updates for the past few days. Most
of my work here has been off site and I'll hopefully be publishing those works soon, likely during the month of August
when the news is slow.
Updates will return late Sunday night or early Monday morning after I return from
a much needed, but brief, weekend vacation. There's a slight possibility of squeezing in a weekend update as I will
have my computer with me.
Until then... thanks!

Patrick Kane signs his 3-year entry dealThe Blackhawks
announced Wednesday, an agreement with 2007 1st overall draft pick Patrick Kane on a three-year, rookie maximum
contract. His cap hit this year will be $3.725 million ($875k base). Chicago Blackhawks press release Hawks sign Kane to 3-year deal AP/Daily Herald Kane's deal worth up to $3.7 million Chris Kuc, Chicago Tribune No more black hole for Blackhawks Ray Slover, Sporting News blog + reaction One Minute Remaining: Lucky #13? Harvey Wittenberg, Blackhawks.nhl.com ** Tickets for all 41 regular
season home games will go on sale Saturday, September 15. Unless you’re getting tickets for opening
night, I wouldn’t worry about it. ** Training camp opens up on September 13. ** Karl Stewart re-signed with the Tampa Bay Lighting. It’s a 1-year, two-way
contract. I cannot create a reasonable argument as why the Hawks shouldn’t have reacquired this guy.
He’s going to play in the minors and would be a huge fan favorite in Rockford and could always be called up for
a few games here and there to provide a spark of energy. ** Ben Simon (Hawks ’97-5th round pick, #110th overall out of Notre Dame)
has signed with the Edmonton Oilers to play for their AHL affiliate, Springfield (MA) Falcons. ** Lee Stempniak (5 goals, 4 assists vs. Hawks 06-07) and the St. Louis Blues avoided arbitration by agreeing
to a new 3-year contract which will pay Stempniak $7.5M over the next three seasons. Firm hired to assist NHLPA in selection of new director ESPN.com Eric Staal and brother Jordan BUSTED! - Mug shots~! Eric McErlain, AOL Fanhouse 2006-07 NHL individual milestones NHL.com Multimedia There seems to be much optimism on the net regarding the Hawks’
playoff hopes. Its summertime and everything is great I’m sure but let’s be serious for a minute.
Wasn’t it just five months ago that Sergei Samsonov was a complete dog that Montreal couldn’t wait to get
rid of and no other NHL team was willing to touch? Martin Havlat has that whole shoulder perpetually dangling-from-the-body
issue. Tuomo Rutuu proved he was more of a checking winger than a top six forward last season.
Remember he scored just 1 goal in the final 12 games. And oh yeah, didn’t Detroit trade Jason
Williams for Kyle Calder and then scratch Calder in the playoffs? And who was more productive following
that trade? The Wings also ran Robert Lang out of town. Yanic Perreault couldn’t
get ice time after the Maple Leafs brought him at the deadline to help contribute to a playoff push. Andrei
Zyuzin is awful. He’s cheaper, but is he any better than Adrian Aucoin? Denis
Savard doesn’t have a true no. 1 defenseman; you could say he doesn’t have a no. 2 either. Dustin
Byfuglien will be in shape until the next 2 for $2 Big Mac promotion. Is Cam Barker the next Andrei Zyuzin?
The Hawks best centreman during the second half of last season (Sharp) is pushed to fourth on the depth chart or possibly
moving to wing. Radim Vrbata is still on this team. Rene Bourque is still on this team.
The Blues are better and Detroit hasn’t moved to the Eastern Conference yet. But that’s
ok I suppose; James Wisniewski will save us~! Have a wonderful summer. Remember to get
yourself one of those affordable ticket packages.

Hawks prospects get praise and criticism, 80's fan favorite turns 50Blackhawks abound in top prospects John McGourty, NHL.com After Jonathan Toews, there are still many question
marks among the top prospects. Dustin Byfuglien (undisciplined), Jack Skille
(unproven, scratched in AHL playoffs, needs to play with intensity every shift), Michael Blunden (no other
player did a better job of impaling themselves into the United Center boards last season, ok I’ll give you Karl Stewart;
if he shows up with improved lateral movement he could play on the fourth line), Troy Brouwer (step slow
at NHL level in 06-07; Is his skill-set enough to play on top three lines in Chicago? If not, he’s useless), Corey
Crawford (talented but a rebound machine down the stretch in Norfolk), Patrick Kane (the size issue
cannot be ignored until he proves it to be wrong; Just because there are players under 5’10’ in the league who
perform at a high level (Brian Gionta being the one everyone seems to point to) shouldn’t prefigure Kane as an immediate
NHL success. He has terrific stick-handling and creativity, but so did Alexandre Daigle.) ** Speaking
of Patrick Kane, he now officially has a high-powered agent, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He has agreed to be represented by the Creative Artists Agency. Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews are also represented by this firm. The Red Line Report rated the Blackhawks with a "gold star.. A+" blackhawks.nhl.com Once a 'Hawk, Alain Nasreddine agrees to 1-year deal with Penguins Post-Gazette Nasreddine, 32, will
likely play most of the season in Wilkes-Barre, barring injuries. He did see action in 44 games with Pittsburgh
in 2006-07, however the addition of Daryl Sydor will knock him down the depth chart once again. Nasreddine,
wearing number 32, played in 7 games with the Hawks in 1998. He was a part of the package amassed in the
November 16, 1998 deal with Montreal that sent Jeff Hackett and Eric Weinrich to the Canadiens
for Jocelyn Thibault, Dave Manson, and Brad Brown. Nasreddine
was originally acquired from the Florida Panthers in late 1996 in exchange for once-heralded Hawks defensive prospect, Czech
native Ivan Droppa (1990 draft, 2nd round, #37 overall). Droppa played in just
19 career NHL games, all with Chicago, registering just one assist, and retired from the game in 2005 as best we can tell. Ex-Hawk, Chris Simon signs 1-year deal to stay with Islanders AP/Daily Herald ** Jack O’Callahan is celebrating birthday
number 50 today. Good ol’ number five was the Blackhawks 6th round choice in the 1977
NHL amateur draft (#96 overall) out of Boston University. O’Callahan, native of Charlestown, MA,
was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but didn’t make his NHL debut until the fall of 1982 with the Hawks.
Well-likened as a player to current Hawks d-man Duncan Keith, he was a big fan favorite because of the famed Olympic
team affiliation and his ultra-aggressive style. He played in 303 regular season games with Chicago (82-87)
and another 27 playoff games during that time. With the Hawks, O’Callahan scored 15 goals and 79
points over 5 seasons. His best years in terms of offensive production came with New Jersey, with which
he spent the final two seasons of his career (87-89), when he had 12 goals and 52 points in 86 games as a Devils blue-liner.
He almost didn’t play in the Olympics after a knee injury sidelined him for the qualifying round and nearly eliminated
him from the tournament roster. O’Callahan’s plight leading to the 1980 Olympics was reenacted
in the motion picture “Miracle on Ice.” ** David Mackey turns 41 today (July 24). Mackey
(LW-gritty, agitator, enforcer type) was 224th overall in the 11th round of the 1984 Entry draft.
In 46 games with the Hawks, he scored 2 goals and 7 points to go along with 149 penalty minutes. He
wore jersey number 26 as a Blackhawk. He also played with Minnesota and St. Louis during his 126 game NHL
career. You may remember he finished his hockey-playing career in the year 2000 with the Chicago Wolves. G- Brian Boucher will play in Flyers organization, with Phantoms this season SI.com Long article on former Hawks equipment manager Kenny McCudden who now works with the Wolves
and NHL teams such as the Avs Hockey’s Future This may answer the question as to where Mike Brodeur fits in the Hawks system Add Hannu Toivonen to the mix at the goalie post in St. Louis ESPN.com ** Chris Herperger has agreed to return to Germany, signing a contract with the Hannover Sporpions of the
Deutsche Liga (German league). Herperger played with Kloten in the Swiss League a season ago after having
played three consecutive seasons with Krefeld Penguins (03-06). Todd Simpson played with Hannover last season, as did Eric Nickulas and former Chicago Wolves forward Brad Tapper. ** Andy Hilbert re-signed with the Islanders. He was an un-restricted free agent.

Hawks team up with Pensacola of ECHL, Barnaby retires, 74-year-old former Hawk to come out of retirement**The
Third Man In will return Saturday with a gigantic update. Expect a response to recent comments made
by Dale Tallon. In the meantime, I’ve updated our Links Page and the Roster Page as well. ** The Blackhawks have a new ECHL affiliate, the Pensacola Ice Pilots. Ice Pilots announce affiliation agreement with Chicago Pensacola News-Journal Former Blackhawks legends and members of the Alumni Organization,
John Marks and Phil Russell are head and assistant coaches of the Ice Pilots respectively. Ice Pilots team up with Chicago, Rockford Ice Pilots press release ** I’ll have more on this in tomorrow’s update:
Al Arbour is coming back to coach his 1,500 game at age 75, thanks to the New York Islanders and
Ted Nolan. Isles' Arbour is back Mark Herrman, NY Newsday Arbour to coach his 1,500 game for the Isles Dave Caldwell, NY Times ** Matthew Barnaby told Buffalo television station WGRZ on Thursday that he is retiring after 14 seasons

in a ChicagoSports.com poll asking whether or not they believe the Hawks will make the playoffs this season, have voted YES,
they believe the Hawks will earn a playoff spot. Apparently Denis Savard has a high speed internet connection. Murray Craven turns 43 today. The Medicine Hat, Alberta native was acquired in a
trade with Vancouver on March 10, 1995 in exchange for Christian Ruuttu. In 157 regular season games with Chicago, Craven scored 30 goals and
89 points. Plagued by back injuries, Craven didn’t give the Hawks exactly what they thought they
were getting when they dealt for the crafty two-way winger and he was dealt to San Jose after the 1996-97 season in which
he scored just 8 goals in 75 games. Craig Muni celebrated his 45th birthday yesterday (July 19). Being
acquired late in the 1992-93 season (March 22, 1993 from Edmonton in exchange for Mike Hudson) and then being
sent away early in the ’93-94 campaign (October 21, 1993 to Buffalo, straight up for a young American defenseman, Keith
Carney), Muni only played in 18 regular season games with the Blackhawks and was a member of the team that dropped
the 1993 Division Semi-Final to St. Louis four games to none. He is a member of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association. Phil Russell, now assistant coach of the Pensacola Ice Pilots (ECHL) under John Marks, turns 55 tomorrow (July 21). Lyle Odelein, infamous for being the first Blackhawk to wear jersey number 7 after Chris Chelios’
departure and being a complete waste of space for most of his 77 games with Chicago, turns 39 on Saturday (July 21).
Odelein scored his first NHL goal against the Hawks, December 19, 1991, on Ed Belfour. It was the
only goal he scored for Montreal that season.

GM Rick Dudley said to Canadian reporters in the weeks leading to the draft. If this report is true, Roenick himself is working the phones, and has contacted another miserable NHL organization;
the Toronto Maple Leafs, about possible employment. From the same article we get this very odd quote: "These
are guys we didn't want to lose," general manager Dale Tallon said. "We've invested some

Be a Hawks Ice Crew Girl, Boogaard's Fight Camp, other notesNumbers Game: Sweet Home Chicago Scott Cullen, TSN Cullen refers to Patrick Kane as a center, which he’s not.
Other than that, there’s not much here that you wouldn’t know already. Head-ing for trouble.... neither Lindros or Roenick can walk away from the NHL Alan Adams, Sportsnet.ca Columnist Alan Adams wants to see Eric Lindros, who’s one
big hit away from being unable to say the alphabet, continue to play and get a chance to win a Stanley Cup and Jeremy Roenick,
who has had concussion issues but not to the level of Lindros’s, retire to the broadcast booth rather than play a 19th
season. ** Blackhawks Ice Crew Auditions will be held at Rocket Ice Arena in Bolingbrook on Wednesday July 25th at 7
o’clock in the evening. Online Application Form can be found here. Don’t leave your house until you read the Ice Crew Audition Requirements. You’ll also need the Ice Crew Waiver Form. What you should know: - You must
be at least 21, female, have proof of identification, and gender. - If you get injured in the tryouts, you’re screwed.
Call your own insurance company. - “You should look well proportioned in skin tight clothing – your
midsection is not covered in the uniform. There are no number requirements.” So,
in other words, don’t bring your fat friend. - They need to judge how “agile you are on the ice”
and how you handle a shovel~! You know, in case Denis Savard needs any additional assistance
in the digging of his own grave. - You must exhibit strong skating skills and “individual ability (tricks,
etc.)” Huh!?!Yeah - If hired, you must work at least 25 home games and you will be paid $50 per game.
Ice Crew girls are also required to work promotional events, both paid and charitable. - Makeup should accentuate
your ‘natural’ beauty, no hair-buns, and no making fun of Tommy Hawk. - Sadly, auditions are closed to the
public. Don’t forget your skates, dummy. Norfolk Admirals are moving on, rebuilding their team with the Tampa Bay Lightning VA Pilot ** Former Blackhawk and recently retired winger Tom Fitzgerald, was hired as the new Director of Player Development for the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
AP/THN release here and More here from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. 31-year old, 1994 NHL
1st Round Draft-pick bust, Jason Botterill was also hired as Director of Hockey Administration. His title may
lead one to believe he was hired to do something he never could during his pro career; administer the hockey.
What if this could lead to the Blackhawks perhaps hiring Eric Lecompte, Adam Bennett, Ty Jones, Ken Yaremchuk or the great Everett Sanipass to …… Administer Blackhawks Hockey~!? Actually,
Botterill will use his master’s degree in finance from the University of Michigan to work on the money side of the front
office and help manage the salary cap. ** I left this out of yesterday’s report, but Minnesota Wild enforcer Derek Boogaard instructed
his second “Fight Camp” for youth hockey players in Regina, Saskatchewan last week.
More here. "It was fun learning all the different techniques,
like where to grab and when to punch. I can take them into next year." 15-year old Midget player "I
don't like (fighting). I don't believe in it. But if there are kids slashing and doing things they shouldn't be
doing, you've got to protect yourself and your teammates." Shelley Baker, mother of a 14-year-old boy. You could’ve
made this up, but it is reality. Adam Proteau of The Hockey News is not impressed. From Boogaard: "The main thing is I'm not teaching
them how to hurt each other. I'm showing them how to protect themselves -- where to hold, where to
grab and, if you're in trouble, what to do. I'm not saying they're not going to get hurt if they fight. It's
just a little insurance to help them out." That being said, here’s a picture of the shirt every participant
received for being a participant in the camp.

Tuesday update: Roenick updates his status, Hawks schedule, site business** He's Not Leaving Just Yet. As was expected, Jeremy Roenick has not officially retired, letting the air out of a July 4th Philadelphia Inquirer report claiming the 18-year NHL veteran had walked away from the sport via text message. Many of the major newspapers and news sites around the country ran
with the Tim Panaccio’s account despite confirming the story with Roenick, nor his agent, Neil Abbott. When have you ever known J.R. to do anything quietly? The text message was either something Panaccio took out of context
(he admittedly didn’t speak to Roenick either) or it was a ploy by Roenick and his agent in an attempt to facilitate
some interest in J.R.’s services. It wasn’t all that long ago that Roenick was saying he had more left in the tank. He’s being realistic as to where he fits in on a team and won't be asking for much cash in return. On a one-year commitment, at a reasonable salary, there’s
no reason Roenick wouldn’t make sense for the Chicago Blackhawks this season. He’s a third
or fourth line winger and he knows it. If he has the interest, he should be given the opportunity to finish
his career and score goal number 500 as a Blackhawk. The truth is; unless Jonathan Toews
and Patrick Kane have 80 points a piece to provide this season, two or three young defenseman make significant
upward strides they haven’t previously shown, Nikolai Khabibulin spends the duration of the season
balancing upside down on his cranium, and Martin Havlat stays healthy and breaks the 100-point barrier; the
Hawks won’t be challenging for a playoff spot and will need to cultivate fan interest in as many ways as possible. Finishing last
season with three goals and six points in his final five games, J.R. is five goals away from 500. Should
he retire, goal number 495, an empty-netter; came on Easter Sunday, April 8th against the Canucks at Jobing.com

The original plan was for everything to be rolling in time for the start of camp in September and it appears as though
it will happen. I do have a full time job, thus updates, for the most part; will be in the morning and later

as possible. It’s been asked before and I do plan on uploading a bio on the Contact page at some point in the future. If you are new, feel free to browse the Archives as there’s been at least one update a day here since the last week of March. The
goal is to gather, and for the site to be a source of as much Blackhawk news as possible, while fusing in some original content.
